How to Improve Contact Lens Hygiene

Contact Lens Health Week 2020

The CDC emphasizes good hygiene practices during The Road to 2020 Vision Campaign

As a leader in eye care hygiene, Bruder Healthcare is excited to announce the theme for the seventh annual Contact Lens Health Week, spearheaded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Aptly named “The Road to 2020 Vision Begins with Contact Lens Health,” this year’s campaign emphasizes the importance of healthy contact lens hygiene practices and gives ECPs tools to help protect against serious eye infections and other illnesses.

Now more than ever, it’s important to remember to wash hands before handling contact lenses. Hand-washing is an essential first step in the fight against eye infections and COVID-19 transmission. Beyond basic hand-washing, many doctors are also encouraging contact lens wearers to adopt a more comprehensive wellness routine using the Bruder Hygienic Eyelid Care Kit. Three easy steps—wipe, spray and warm—are all that’s needed to get wearers on the right path.

The routine is easy:

  • First,  use Bruder Hygienic Eyelid Wipes to wipe away debris. The Eyelid Wipes are very effective at removing anything on the lids and lashes, including makeup, so they are an obvious first step in a hygiene routine.
  • Second, apply one to two sprays of Bruder Hygienic Eyelid Solution to closed eyes. No rinsing is required. Simply spray and let dry. The hypochlorous acid is an important part of the hygiene routine at present because it demonstrates broad-spectrum antimicrobial [i] Importantly, several hypochlorous acid preparations are currently listed on the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s list of disinfectants for use against SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19.[ii] The Bruder Hygienic Eyelid Solution Spray is pure 0.02% Hypochlorous Acid solution, one of the highest concentrations available for use near the eyes.
  • Finally, apply a warmed Bruder Moist Heat Eye Compress — the number one doctor recommended mask. It can be used morning, noon or night — whatever is most convenient. Hygienic Eyelid Sheets can be used along with the compress to keep it clean between washings. These untreated, micro-fine sheets allow moisture to pass through without breaking down and are also convenient if the lids secrete any oils during therapy.

“As strong advocates of hygiene in eye care, Bruder is thrilled that the CDC is shining a spotlight on this topic,” Stan Joseph, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We’ve seen a huge spike in interest among patients and providers looking for safe, affordable, practical options to stay as healthy as possible during these times, and the Bruder Hygienic Eyelid Care Kit helps meet this growing need.”
