Styes

What is a Stye?

As an infection on the eyelid that causes an uncomfortable red bump, a stye can be external (base of the eyelashes) or internal (within eyelid glands). While a stye will usually clear up on its own, the wait can be uncomfortable for patients.

Sometimes occuring after a stye has healed, chalazions are inflamed areas often filled with pus and other secretions that clog the glands.

Risk factors

  • touching eyes with unwashed hands
  • leaving makeup on overnight
  • using cosmetics after their use-by dates
  • poor contact lens hygiene
A stye can develop when the small glands
that line the eyelid get plugged

At-home treatment remedies can speed the healing process.

Adolescents tend to have styes more commonly, but people of any age can develop them.

Recommended Treatments

  • Apply a Warm Compress. Place a warmed Bruder Moist Heat Eye Compress (available in a single or double-eye model) on the eye for 8-10 minutes a few times per day. This can help open up the glands and drain the stye more quickly. It can also ease the pain.

  • Practice Good Eye Hygiene. It is important to keep the eye area clean. Daily use of Bruder Eyelid Cleansing Wipes and antibacterial Bruder Hygienic Eyelid Solution can help.

Symptoms Often Include:

  • a lump on the eyelid
  • swelling of the eyelid
  • pain
  • redness
  • tenderness
  • burning sensation
  • itching of the eye
  • blurry vision
  • discharge of mucus from the eye
  • light sensitivity
  • tearing
  • discomfort when blinking
  • the feeling that there is an object in the eye
